{"id":1449,"date":"2015-07-02T17:36:53","date_gmt":"2015-07-02T17:36:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thecafeprojects.com\/declarationproject\/?p=1449"},"modified":"2015-07-02T17:36:53","modified_gmt":"2015-07-02T17:36:53","slug":"a-declaration-of-independence-from-corporatistbehaviorist-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/declarationproject.org\/?p=1449","title":{"rendered":"A Declaration of Independence from Corporatist\/Behaviorist Education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When, in the course of a teaching career, it becomes essential to break from excessively rational beliefs and schemes and to begin thinking openly and freely, disregarding the dictatorial influences of political hacks, the insidious prodding of education gurus and the bleating of complacent peers, it is necessary that the thinking educator admonish the world with the whys and wherefores of their intended independence from those scourges of productive learning,\u00a0<b><i>Corporations and their Behaviorist lackeys<\/i><\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>We hold these truths to be self-evident: that education is best described as a journey, not a destination; that education is not a medicine or treatment to be inflicted upon learners; that a partnership between willing learner, skilled teacher, and supportive guardian forms the foundation of productive education; and that a democratic society sustains itself by practice of its ideals within the educational environment. Numerous corporations and anti-public education fronts\u2014<i>including, but not limited to, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edweek.org\/teachers\/living-in-dialogue\/2012\/08\/can_schools_defeat.html\">Gates Foundation<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.au.org\/blogs\/wall-of-separation\/the-waltons-war-on-public-education-heirs-of-wal-mart-founder-spend\">Walton Family Foundation,<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/site\/pp.asp?b=7743229&amp;c=dkLNK1MQIwG\">ALEC<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2013\/dec\/05\/state-conservative-groups-assault-education-health-tax\">State Policy Network<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewire.com\/national\/2013\/07\/meet-teach-america-resistance-movement-s-growing-within\/67125\/\">Teach for America<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dianeravitch.net\/2012\/06\/14\/stand-for-children-does-not-stand-for-public-education\/\">Stand for Children<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nycityeye.blogspot.com\/2012\/09\/teach-plus-studentsfirst-lobbying-and.html\">Teach Plus<\/a><\/i>\u2014 plot and contrive to dictate educational policy, conduct and beliefs. When unelected billionaires use their financial clout to promulgate a destructive vision for American education, it is the right\u2014nay, the obligation\u2014of every educator to break all the Windows\u00ae\u00a0they can, chop down every Solution Tree that stands, consign their Common Core lesson plans to the reformatorium, and renew their commitment to student-centered instruction in order to preserve their claim to professional status, ensure their future happiness, and maintain their present sanity.<\/p>\n<p>A glance at the attempts by corporatist forces to deform public education provides ample evidence that ideas and opinions formed in the business world are all too tempting to politicians who rely on corporate funds for re-election. Behold: political narrow-mindedness, focus on data rather than humanity, the tendency to blame those who teach for the ills of society, and an unwillingness to consider humane methods of instruction as acceptable alternatives to techniques of indoctrination serve as warnings to the nation\u2019s teachers and learners that they, too<ins cite=\"mailto:David%20&amp;%20Rosemary%20Sudmeier\" datetime=\"2003-11-17T08:15\">,<\/ins>\u00a0are doomed to a future of boredom and inner turmoil if they do not act against the domination of\u00a0<b><i>Corporations and their Behaviorist toadies<\/i><\/b>\u00a0in public education today.<\/p>\n<p>When narrow-mindedness reaches that point where afflicted educators are shamed for considering alternatives to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sociology.org\/content\/2006\/tier2\/tarnoczi.html\">shallow reasoning and attitudes<\/a>taught them by the nefarious Dufour Duo, their uprising is most justified. So have I and my fellow educators suffered. We rise above this morass of ridiculous ideals today to present several of the offenses of the\u00a0<b><i>Corporatist\/Behaviorist Cabal<\/i><\/b>\u00a0for consideration:<\/p>\n<p><b><i>They<\/i><\/b>\u00a0assert a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2012\/07\/the-supreme-court-still-thinks-corporations-are-people\/259995\/\">corporation\u2019s right to legal status as individuals<\/a>\u00a0in order to exert unrestricted financial influence over public policy,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/seattleducation2010.wordpress.com\/2012\/08\/28\/why-washington-state-schools-are-47-in-education-funding-lets-start-with-bill-gates\/\">while also enjoying exemptions<\/a>\u00a0from the obligations which citizens affected by those policies must endure.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>They<\/i><\/b>\u00a0degrade democracy by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/deutsch29.wordpress.com\/2013\/12\/07\/what-if-common-core-had-followed-the-democratic-process\/\">excluding teaching professionals<\/a>\u00a0from the process of creating standards and imposing those standards without public debate.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>They\u00a0<\/i><\/b>devalue the professionalism of teachers by demanding the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.educationrethink.com\/2012\/02\/what-i-mean-by-autonomy.html\">surrender of all autonomy<\/a>\u00a0in favor of scripted lessons and prescriptive standards.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>They<\/i><\/b>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.edweek.org\/ew\/articles\/2012\/04\/18\/28loveless_ep.h31.html?tkn=VWOF28Ki6ldEqAPhPSSqAP85ha2E4XD5pLgi&amp;cmp=ENL-EU-NEWS2\">claim without evidence<\/a>\u00a0that setting \u201cstandards\u201d will transform education for the better.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>They<\/i><\/b>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slj.com\/2013\/12\/legislation\/washington-state-representative-introduces-student-privacy-bill\/#_\">threaten the privacy of students<\/a>\u00a0and seek to transform public schools into another source of profit.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>They<\/i><\/b>\u00a0demand unswerving loyalty and obedience from educators, rather than\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.edweek.org\/ew\/articles\/2013\/09\/18\/04kohn.h33.html?tkn=LYCCJm2y%2FBwkOp6duXImtgqVyBi1GrWQUzsz&amp;cmp=clp-sb-ascd&amp;intc=es\">encouraging professional discourse<\/a>\u00a0and promoting respectful dialogue.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>They<\/i><\/b>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/coreyrobin.com\/2012\/09\/12\/why-people-do-hate-teachers-unions-because-they-hate-teachers\/\">vilify the professional associations<\/a>\u00a0of educators and encourage citizens to view teachers and other public servants as parasites on society.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>They<\/i><\/b>\u00a0use non-profit fronts to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/12\/13\/nyregion\/educational-publishers-charity-accused-of-seeking-profits-will-pay-millions.html?emc=edit_tnt_20131212&amp;tntemail0=y&amp;_r=3&amp;\">conceal profit-seeking enterprises<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>They<\/i><\/b>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thehumanist.org\/may-june-2013\/cheating-students-how-our-schools-fail-the-humanistic-vision-of-education\/\">alienate youth<\/a>\u00a0from their educations by placing undue emphasis on outcomes as opposed to personal investment in the process of learning.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>They<\/i><\/b>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=reductionism%20standard%20based%20grading&amp;source=web&amp;cd=63&amp;ved=0CC8QFjACODw&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ied.edu.hk%2Fobl%2Ffiles%2F135808.pdf&amp;ei=FvjrUv6_CYe7oQSu9YH4CQ&amp;usg=AFQjCNHHbPIOl1RGIqi0npeUqO-D8alTnA\">reduce<\/a>\u00a0the beauty and complexity of academic endeavor to atomistic standards as part of their crusade to deprive educators of professional discretion.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>They<\/i><\/b>\u00a0strip seasoned professionals of dignity and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/articles.courant.com\/2014-01-17\/news\/hc-op-natale-teacher-ready-to-quit-over-common-cor-20140117_1_new-teacher-evaluation-program-common-core-state-standards-college-presidents\">destroy their morale<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We, therefore, educators of America, straightforwardly and without dissembling, appealing to the Master Instructor for the iGeneration, do, in the name\u2014and assuming the authority\u2014 of public school teachers throughout this Land, brazenly publish and declare that we are, and of right ought to be, Free and Independent of Corporate Influence; that we are absolved of allegiance to Arne Duncan and his ilk, and that all connection between educators and Bill Gates\u2019 connivances is hereby dissolved, and that as Free and Independent Tutors, we have full power to offer learners a democratic environment, disregard the CCSS, ignore John Hattie\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1080\/00220272.2011.576774\">latest work of fiction<\/a>, and do all things that free-thinkers of the world might do.
